I’m taking part in an exhibition called Dead End Hero in the Kunstenlab in Deventer, together with Hans van der Ham, Harma Heikens, Pawel Jankowski, Paul Klemann, Jan van Nuenen, Boudewijn van der Poel, Ewoud van Rijn, Hidde van Schie en Wytse Sterk.

Enkeling is mijn pseudoniem, eigen naam Symen Veenstra, aangenaam.
Ik ben geboren in 1973 in de Veenhoop, Friesland. Ik heb in Heerenveen, Zwolle, Groningen, Den Haag en Amsterdam gewoond en ben sinds eind 2013 in Haarlem gevestigd. In Zwolle heb ik een reclame- en marketingopleiding gevolgd en in Groningen de kunstacademie Minerva, richting grafische vormgeving. Na een zestal jaren als grafisch ontwerper gewerkt te hebben profileer ik me sinds 2006 vooral als beeldmaker. Mijn liefde voor letters heb ik uit die tijd meegenomen, al maak ik ze tegenwoordig wel veelal zelf.

styles upon styles
Ik werk in een veelvoud van stijlen, van realistisch tot cartoonesk, en vind het leuk en belangrijk om met nieuwe technieken te experimenteren. “Ik vind die ene stijl van je mooi, maar die andere wat minder” krijg ik wel eens te horen. Ik vind het echter prima om vooraf afspraken te maken in welke richting gewerkt gaat worden.

variëteit
Ik heb de afgelopen jaren heel verschillende projecten gedaan, van redactionele illustraties tot beeldmerken, en van prints voor mode tot typografie voor reclamecampagnes. Ik sta sowieso open voor nieuwe uitdagingen en andere disciplines.

Portretten maak ik ook in opdracht van particulieren. Het eindresultaat is dan een art print op canvas of op hoogwaardig papier.

vrij werk
Tekenen en letteren doe ik altijd, ook zonder concrete aanleiding. Experimenten die ik in vrij werk heb gedaan komen vaak later weer in werk in opdracht terug. Soms doe ik mee aan exposities.

European Design Award
De door mij ontworpen Rockalender 2010 for Zwaan printmedia won een Silver Award tijdens de European Design Awards in Vilnius. Daarvòòr had deze ook al de Kalenderwedstrijd 2010 gewonnen.

About Enkeling

Enkeling is my alias, my real name is Symen Veenstra. I’ve learned that most people find my name hard to pronounce and even harder to spell (even in Dutch), so that’s why I use a pseudonym.
I was born in 1973, in de Veenhoop. I’ve lived all over Holland and since the end of 2013 I live in Haarlem. I studied advertising and marketing in Zwolle, after that I graduated at the art academy of Groningen, Academie Minerva, in graphic design.
I worked for six years as a graphic designer before I decided to become an illustrator. I did keep my love of letters from that time, although I prefer to make those myself now.

illustration styles
I work in a lot of different styles and love to try out new techniques and directions. Some people tell me they prefer one style over another. That’s perfectly fine, I don’t mind agreeing on a specific style before I start work.

disciplines
As an illustrator I’ve worked on a variety of projects, for example magazine illustrations, designing logo’s, prints for fashion, making typography for ad campains, cartoons, and photo comics. Apart from that I’m always open to propositions for new directions.

portraits
I also do portraits for private individuals. I can deliver them as art prints or prints on canvas.

self initiated
Inbetween commissions I’m always creating images and letters. Experiments with new techniques and directions I discover this way are often used later in commercial work.
I also sometimes participate in exhibitions.
